French

French Intent Statement

At Steyning C of E Primary children learn French as their Modern Foreign Language. We believe a high-quality language education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Our language lessons are taught by a language specialist teacher. Children currently begin their language journey with French in Year 1 for 30 minutes per week in order to maximise both their progress and love of language-learning.  Cross-curricular links are made wherever possible.  New vocabulary and expressions are taught through a series of fun games, songs and stories. As children become more confident, they use their language skills to understand authentic French sources, role-play everyday situations and write grammatically correct sentences in French.

French Values

LOVE – We show love by being kind and encouraging others when they may be finding speaking, listening, reading and writing challenging in the foreign language.

HAPPY – We show happiness by making the learning enjoyable and praising every effort, enabling the children to feel secure.

RESPECT – We show respect by understanding  and appreciating that there are cultural differences between other countries and languages.

COLLABORATIVE – We show that we are collaborative by engaging in conversations; asking and answering questions; expressing opinions and responding to those of others.

CURIOUS – We show that we are curious by wanting to learn about the new language and culture and by encouraging the children to make connections with the foreign country and our own.

BRAVE – We show that we are brave by adopting the attitude ‘Je peux’, rather than, ‘Je ne peux pas’!
