French
French Aims
At Steyning C of E Primary children learn French as their Modern Foreign Language. We believe a high-quality language education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. We encourage them to understand their own cultures and those of others, and they will develop a deeper understanding of the multilingual world in which we live in. Our language lessons are taught by a language specialist teacher. Cross-curricular links are made wherever possible. New vocabulary and expressions are taught through a series of fun games, songs and stories. As children become more confident, they use their language skills to understand authentic French sources, role-play everyday situations and write grammatically correct sentences in French.
The skills developed in French will include:
• Understand and respond to spoken and written French.
• Speak with increasing pronunciation, fluency, confidence and spontaneity.
• Write in French at varying lengths.
• Discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in French.
French Values
LOVE – We show love by being kind and encouraging others when they may be finding speaking, listening, reading and writing challenging in the foreign language.
HAPPY – We show happiness by making the learning enjoyable and praising every effort, enabling the children to feel secure.
RESPECT – We show respect by understanding and appreciating that there are cultural differences between other countries and languages.
COLLABORATIVE – We show that we are collaborative by engaging in conversations; asking and answering questions; expressing opinions and responding to those of others.
CURIOUS – We show that we are curious by wanting to learn about the new language and culture and by encouraging the children to make connections with the foreign country and our own.
BRAVE – We show that we are brave by adopting the attitude ‘Je peux’, rather than, ‘Je ne peux pas’!
