Welcome to Year 6!

The Teachers and Teaching Assistants in Year 6 are:

We would like to take this chance to welcome you and your child to Year 6 and to introduce the team. Year 6 is made up of two classes, Buzzards and Stoats. The teachers are Mrs Roberts and Miss Sturgeon. Supporting us in the classroom, we have 2 wonderful adults who work as Teaching Assistants: Mrs Duffet and Mrs Ridley. We all feel very passionate about Year 6 and believe that we provide them with a nurturing, engaging and inspiring environment to enable them to become more rounded learners, ready to make the next step into secondary school.

Year 6 is a important time in your child's education; we hope to ensure that it is a very happy and rewarding time filled with exciting opportunities. Over the year, your child will continue to be encouraged to become more independent and to take ownership of their education. Throughout Year 6, we will focus on helping your child reach the standard required for the end of Key Stage 2, for which they will sit tests in the Summer Term. We strongly believe that, by working together, we can help ensure that your child will reach their full potential.

Literacy

In Literacy, we will explore the work of famous scientists and physicians who have influenced our understanding of the circulatory system today, such as famous physician William Harvey. We will present our findings through different media to inform others about the fantastic work of these scientists. We will also develop our writing skills through narrative stories, acting as different cells within the body and describing the journey that they make!

Maths

In Maths, we will continue to practise the four operations through arithmetic and reasoning problems, applying our knowledge to other areas like fractions, decimals and percentages. We will look at real-life word problems involving statistics to develop our understanding of bar charts, pie charts, pictograms and line graphs.

Reading - 'Blood, Bones and Body Bits' by Nick Arnold & 'Holes' by Louis Sachar

We enjoyed reading 'Blood, Bones and Body Bits' last term, and created our innovative booklets to explore some of the interesting facts that we had read. We will continue investigating the non-fiction aspects of this book to support our Literacy and Science topics, before beginning 'Holes'.

Science - Bloodheart

We will be able to explain the function of the circulatory system, the components of blood and their function, and then plan an enquiry to investigate the impact of lifestyle choices on our bodies, including diet, exercise and drugs. We will look into what constitutes a healthy diet, and recognise the effects of a poor diet on health. 

We will develop our knowledge of classification and inheritance through our topic 'ID'. Children will explore human identity, genetic characteristics and family traits.

RE - Gospel

We will explore the idea of Jesus as a healer, responding to different stories and how they have guided the lives of Christians today. 

Geography

We will study the area of Tulum, Mexico in comparison to our local area, looking at similarities and differences between the temperature and climate. We will use maps, atlases and globes to locate these areas, before focusing on the human and physical features. 

DT 

The outcome of our DT project will be to perform a Mexican-themed puppet show for our Year 3 buddy class. In lessons, we will learn how to make a marionette puppet by: creating prototypes, designing our own fairytale puppet, writing detailed step-by-step instructions and independently making our own puppets using a range of tools, materials and techniques. Throughout the project we will be encouraged to reflect upon and evaluate the effectiveness of our puppet, making changes and adaptations as we go. We make our puppets individually, but we will write our scripts and perform as a group.

RSHE 

In Me and My World lessons we will learn to:

• Recognise how we are different to others’ and how it is important to respect those differences
• Identify when stereotyping occurs
• Practise challenging stereotypical views in a safe environment
• Demonstrate appreciation for the range of national, regional, religious, and ethnic identities in the UK
• Realise the consequence of anti-social and aggressive behaviour
• Understand what democracy is and about the basic institutions that support it locally and nationally
• Recognise the role of voluntary, community and pressure groups. Exploring our responsibilities within our global communities.

Computing 

We will use micro:bits to help us create programs on controllable devices. We will apply our knowledge of programming to a new environment and test these programs on emulators.
