Courageous Advocacy
Courageous Advocacy at Steyning Primary School
Courageous advocacy is the long-term commitment to the Christian vision of the human family -human flourishing is not possible without a commitment to one another! Our school community regularly work together to fundraise to help those less fortunate than ourselves. As well as national charity days such as Comic Relief or Children in Need, we also like to campaign for charities closer to home. We support the local foodbank, and we like to ensure we instil a sense of gratitude and appreciation within our community. However:
‘The role of the Church of England as the established Church is to look constantly to the bigger picture, to follow a higher calling, to be a prophetic voice in society. Character education may be educating every child to be as well-equipped to be a prophet as to turn a profit’.
In the above quote, The Church of England Education Office explains that Courageous Advocacy is so much more than listing which charities we support as a school. At SPS, we want to create a sense of social action and make clear links to our school values to build within our children a lifelong commitment to global justice and equality.
We want our children to firmly believe they can change the world and encourage them to always ask ‘why?’; an important part of the Christian response. We love to share. We are training our children as ‘agents of change’ whose role will not end when they leave us but continue on to make positive changes wherever they go.
