Steyning Primary attended the final girls football tournament of the season run by Horsham Leisure Link in Horsham Park on a very warm spring evening, which makes a change from normal. We took all the squad players in Year 5 to see how they would play against tough Year 6 opposition. We knew this would be a steep learning curve but one that would give us a good idea of positions for each player next year.
Leechpool were our first opponents, a very tried and tested team, full of Year 6s who know how to play and dominate games. Our girls fought hard but were overpowered by a tight unit. Southwater B were next, another team who have been together for a long time. During this game we saw the team really pulling together with tackles flying in and chances created at both ends, but unfortunately one goal settled the match for the opposition. Our third game against Southwater D changed the whole reflection of the tournament as we ran out winners by two goals to nil, both scored by Poppy Pierre, one a maisy dribble from her own half. Lastly Kingslea A, game on. This match was end to end with chances cleared off lines, posts getting in the way and defenders flying evreywhere. Two goals ended this contest, both to Kingslea, but our girls showed great stickability and tenacity through to the end.
Well done everyone and I look forward to next season.
