Steyning took two teams, boys and girls, to the Southern Area Cross Country Finals held at Windlesham House on a very demanding course of 1.75 miles which incorporates many up hill and down dale sections. This year there were more teams representing our 150 schools throughout the whole of the southern region, and many individuals running to try and get into the All Sussex Finals held at Hickstead later in the year. Only finishers in the top 15 would do this. Our girls went first coming home with a score of 127 for our first four girls which meant we were in with a chance of a top three finish. Our boys then ran magnificently striding home with the lowest score we have ever achieved 75. We waited with baited breath. We should mention here that there were 19 teams in the Girls section and 15 in the boys. Announcement! Sixth place, only twenty points behind third place Steyning girls, Second place for the boys only beaten by Windlesham on their own course. Both truly superb results. Our athletes persistence, true grit and determination must be admired as must Fred Le Bas stepping in at the last moment. Patrick Ford also finished in the top 15 with Grace Dorrington and Alfie Brewer only just missing out. This all bodes well for the Christ's Hospital Cross Country just after half term. Excellent.
